Dossier 04 · What is lived

Perceiving is not recording reality.

Our nervous system receives information from the environment and from the body, but it never processes it out of context. Attention, physiological state, memory, learning and relationships all contribute to what becomes our experience.

A situated body

We perceive from within an organism whose nervous, hormonal, immune, metabolic and microbial systems interact.

A unique history

An odour may evoke a sensation, an image, an emotion, a memory or nothing in particular. No experience can be imposed from outside.

A possible relationship

Understanding that another person filters the same situation differently can open up greater curiosity, without removing discernment or boundaries.

The models

Useful maps, never the whole territory.

PNIE studies certain interactions between the psyche and the nervous, endocrine and immune systems. Polyvagal theory can serve as an interpretive framework around safety and co-regulation, but it remains debated and constitutes neither a diagnosis nor a complete explanation.
